VisLab
Overview
The meeting room “VisLab” is located on the first floor of the OMP building, see the map for details.
It is equipped to suite various settings:
- There is an 86" interactive whiteboard with two active pens and all-in-one video conferencing system. It can be used, for example, as a digital whiteboard for lectures and collaboration, for showing presentations and for (hybrid) video conferences.
- Two big whiteboards are also available on the side wall for classic lectures or collaboration.
View from the back of the room. The interactive whiteboard is at the front of the room whereas the two big whiteboards can be seen on the left side.
Booking the room
The room can be booked by writing an e-mail to vislab.mathematik(at)univie.ac.at, providing the meeting name, date and time. The available times can be seen at the room's calendar view.
The general booking rules are as follows:
- The research group of Prof. Scherzer has a pre-booking right as the room belongs to them.
- Anyone can book for the next winter semester starting from July 1st.
- Anyone can book for the next summer semester starting from February 1st.
After your meeting please ensure that everything is in order and ready for the next meeting.
Interactive whiteboard
The display in the room is an ADVANTouch Pro 3 interactive whiteboard on an electric height adjustable stand.
Some of its features are:
- 86" display with 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution
- Precision touch and pen input
- Two active pens usable at the same time
- Built-in Android OS for easy and quick use without a computer
- Whiteboard app with many features for creating lecture slides or collaboration
- USB-C as well as HDMI+USB (for touch and AV devices) input
- Wireless USB-A/C dongle for remote connection
- All-in-on video conference camera
The interactive whiteboard can be turned on by pressing the appropriate button on the right side of the display. If it has been off, it takes a few seconds to start the built-in Android OS after which you are greeted with the home screen.
Please do not move the whiteboard to avoid damaging it or a wall - thank you!
The two active pens are in the pen holder/charger on the right side. Please put them back after use so that they are charged for the next use. The tip is used for writing whereas the end cap is used for erasing. The round button works as an air mouse, i.e. you can press it and point the end cap to the screen to show a red, translucent dot. The other two buttons function as next/previous buttons for e.g. presentations. Both functions work with all input devices, i.e. the built-in Android OS or a connected computer.
The built-in Android OS is relatively easy to use. Swipe from the left, bottom or right to get a menu where you can start an application, switch the input, record the screen and more. Applications can be put in floating mode (like on a desktop OS) or run in full-screen (like on a mobile phone). If an application is in full-screen mode, swipe from the top to reveal the window tool bar which allows you to shrink or close the application.
All the controls and cable connections of the whiteboard are on the right side.
The two active pens can be used simultaneously as whiteboard pens, as air mouse and as a presentation remote.
The home screen with the ADVANote application visible in the middle and device controls like sound on the top right.
Automatic deletion of files
Since you do not need to log in when using the Android OS, everything you store on it will be readable by everyone. Therefore we recommend using a USB stick for storing your files.
Additionally, all files on the interactive whiteboard are deleted every day. So make sure to save your files somewhere else.
Usage as whiteboard
The built-in Android OS contains an application called “ADVANote” which is a featureful whiteboard application. To use it tap with the pen on the ADVANote name on the home screen.
The whiteboard application has a utilities bar at the bottom where you can change how you interact with the whiteboard, e.g. drawing, selecting, erasing or using additional tools. Each of the two active pens can be configured separately in terms of which kind of stroke the pen should make and its color. It is also possible to assign another color/stroke combination to passive pens (or finger) or use them for selecting items.
The whiteboard application supports additional tools like using a ruler for creating straight lines, a set square, different forms like square/rhombus/etc, a formula editor and much more.
When using the whiteboard you would normally just start writing. Once the board is full, you create another page using the buttons at the bottom right. After everything is finished you can use the menu on the far left to save the whiteboard in the application's native format or export it to PDF.
We recommend bringing an USB stick, that can be plugged in on the right side of the display, for saving your files.
For more information also have a look at this presentation on the features of ADVANote.

Usage with computers and for video conferencing
While the built-in Android OS is quite usable on its own, it is often necessary or easier to use the interactive whiteboard with your own laptop. On the back of the right side of the interactive whiteboard you will find color-coded cables. Use either the USB-C cable or both the HDMI and USB cable.
Either way once you connect the cables to your laptop, it will have the following devices available (tested on recent Linux and Windows laptops, usage with a macOS laptop is also possible but not the whole functionality is supported):
- The interactive whiteboard display itself (We recommend using the unified view where the laptop and display show the same image as it avoid problems with the touch positions.)
- The touch and pen inputs
- Sound output via the interactive display and the all-in-one video conferencing solution
- Microphone input from the interactive display and the all-in-one video conferencing solution
- Camera input from the all-in-one video conferencing solution
- Any USB devices attached to the right side of the display
Depending on the application the pen will also work correctly, i.e. writing with the tip and erasing with the cap.
If you want to use this setup as a whiteboard, we recommend using and Xournal++ on Linux/Windows/macOS or OneNote on Windows. Xournal++ is an especially great application for note taking.
As an alternative to the cables it is possible to use the USB-A/C dongle for connecting a laptop to the display. All the devices will be available but note that since this connection is wireless you have more latency. It is perfectly fine when doing presentations or quickly connecting a student's laptop for showing their work. It is not recommended when doing a video conference.
It's best to use the USB-C cable and only fall back to HDMI+USB when necessary.
The USB-A/C dongle allows for wirelessly connecting a computer.
